Although EMDR was originally developed to alleviate the anxiety and distress associated with traumatic memories, it has now evolved into an integrative approach that can be used across the clinical spectrum. The model suggests that information related to traumatic or distressing experience is not fully processed by the nervous system, and that it is this incomplete processing that leads to dysfunctional reactions and are the cause of many disorders. EMDR is thought to facilitate proper and thorough processing, leading to new learning, elimination of emotional distress, and the development of new insights and adaptive living. This is an information processing approach grounded in neuropsychological theory; the efficiency of the approach is consistently supported by research.
Although there is no coherent, comprehensive or inclusive theory or definition of hypnosis, it is generally acceptable to refer to hypnotic trance as a heightened state of relaxation and suggestibility in which the subconscious mind is receptive to positive thoughts and suggestions. Hypnotherapy is the application of hypnosis to the therapeutic process and is generally used to elicit new interpretations of experience, resulting in greater flexibility and choice. |

Geropsychology is concerned with assisting older persons and their families obtain and maintain well-being, adjust to life changes and achieve maximum potential during later life. The focus at AHA Psychological is to differentiate "normal aging" from "pathological processes" found in this population (i.e. dementias), and to focus on a strengths-based model of life. Geropsychological services may include an assessment of memory, cognition, motor and reasoning skills. Dementia screenings and/or evaluations are offered, as is education and consultation. For those experiencing loss or decline in functioning, cognitive maintenance and/or brain brightening services are available.
A neuropsychological approach aims to understand how the structure and function of the brain relate to specific psychological processes. In addition to assessing brain functioning (measuring attention, memory, reasoning, motor skills, executive functioning, new learning abilities), knowledge of the neurosciences is used to assist with the management and rehabilitation of people who have suffered illness or injury to the brain.
Brain Brightening is a term used to describe a process in which the brain is taught to increase its' activity and improve its' flexibility. During the course of this process, the slower brainwave activity, theta, is decreased while brainwave activity associated with increased alertness, focus and concentration is increased. Increasing the arousal level of the otherwise "slowed brain," results in feelings of being energized and alert; many have reported enhancements of memory. Brain brightening is also known to help regulate the sleep cycle. Also read about Midwest Neurofeedback Services by clicking here.
