Neurofeedback – What is it?

Neurofeedback is a learning process wherein, with the assistance of a trained clinician and the EEG interface, the brain learns to re-regulate itself, thereby optimizing one’s mental, physical, and spiritual wellbeing. The brain teaches itself, guided by positive reinforcement, to better regulate itself.

While more traditional forms of biofeedback are used to teach people skills only applicable in specific situations (i.e.learning to decrease autonomic arousal during a panic attack); the goal of EEG biofeedback is actually to retrain the brain and reinforce a better regulated state all of the time.

Note: Neurofeedback is also known as Brainwave Biofeedback, EEG Biofeedback, and Neurotherapy.

How it works in a given session

Neurofeedback is a totally painless and non-invasive procedure. The first step is a thorough evaluation. Then, treatment begins.

The process begins with the placement of electrodes on the scalp to record and measure electrical brain activity. These electrodes detect the different brainwave frequencies, such as delta, theta, alpha, beta, and gamma.

During a neurofeedback session, the individual engages in an activity or task, such as playing a video game or watching a movie, while their brainwave activity is monitored in real-time. The EEG signals are processed and displayed on a computer screen or other visual feedback device.

The feedback provided is in the form of audio or visual cues that reflect the individual’s brainwave patterns. For example, if the individual’s brainwaves align with the desired frequency range, they may receive positive feedback like a sound or the advancement in a video game.

The ultimate goal of EEG neurofeedback is to help individuals become more aware of their brainwave patterns and learn to self-regulate them. Through repetitive training and reinforcement, the brain is encouraged to produce desired patterns associated with improved focus, relaxation, or emotional regulation.

Over time, the brain’s ability to self-regulate improves, leading to positive changes in cognitive, emotional, and behavioral functioning. EEG neurofeedback has been used to address various conditions, including attention disorders, anxiety, depression, migraines, and more.
